Frustrated

Okay so I gave away all my money last night at the 1-2 NL table.

I certainly wouldn't say I "lost" money last night... actually, I won quite a bit. However, 2 hands as a dominating favorite getting sucked out on left me broke.

But we're not going to dwell on that.

So I took my last bit of money and dignity and bought my ass in to a $4 120-person SNG.

I finished 14th when I made a horrible mistake. I flopped top pair and got sucked out on.

I played for 3 hours and until that point had lost only 1 showdown. But of course I have to get involved in a pot with the stubborn chip leader and that ends my tourney. Out in 14th.

On a much happier note, I saw Wil Wheaton playing a $10 heads-up SNG. I really "geeked out" and I'm not ashamed:

BigHeeb91 [observer]: Hey Wil don't mean to distract you, but I really enjoyed Just a Geek
Wil Wheaton: That's really cool of you to say... thanks, man.

I was tempted to type, "good luck, wesley crusher!" but that would have been lame and he might have gotten upset at me. I wanted to, but I didn't.

And yes, I really did enjoy his book.

Oh yah... Although he was crippled early, and battled back as a severe short stack for about 10 minutes, he wasn't able to win.

A little 4-8 action at the casino

So I went to the Casino today to play some 4-8 holdem. I have to say that I like the poker area at casino AZ. It is huge with approximately 50 tables and they spread LHE, Omaha Hi, Stud and Horse and limits from 3-6 up to I think 100-200 and a 5-150 spread game. The area is not separated from the gaming floor but unless you sit on the fringes, you don't notice the smoke much. You still smell like smoke when you leave but that is expected. Also I find the play there o be above average which is good for me. I like playing with people who play good. I played last week and it was a donkey table to be honest but today everyone but 1-2 people were solid.

Alright, so back to poker. I sit down and buy-in for $100 which is all I brought. Within the first 35-40 minutes I was up to $220. Then over the next hour fell down to about $80 and hung there for a while. Then I won 3 hands in a row, the first of which was a kill pot. I was in the bb blind with 9-7 so I called the other $4. Flop came K108. I called the bet from the utg player who was all in and so did two other players. The turn was a 6. I check and player bets 16 and the other player calls and I raise. They both thought I had the flush and folded because that put the flush out there. I held on when the all in player missed her 4 card flush. So now back up to $220 and instead of leaving I stay feeling good and wanting to play the whole night. Well literally over the course of the next 2 hours I won 1 pot for $12 profit and proceeded to lose the rest of my money. I went completely card dead and when I had a hand they either didn't hold up or had a higher pair.

3 hands during my downfall.

1. bb with QQ. 4 limpers, sb raises to 8 and I reraise to 12 and the utg caps it. 1 other limper calls, 2 other fold and sb calls. Flop comes AJ8. Checks around. Turn comes an ace. I bet and it folds to the sb who reluctantly calls and the river is a blank with possible flush. He checks and I check behind and he shows KK.

2. Button with A9 of spades. BB raises to 8 and I call after limping in. Flop comes A with 2 hearts. Checks to me and I bet and bb calls and everyone else folds. Turn another heart. I bet and he calls. River another heart. I check, he bets and I fold showing my A9 face up and he shows his QQ with the heart. I say out loud, you didn't believe me and he says you were on the button, you could have been stealing. I'll leave that one alone.

3. 3 position -AQ of diamonds. UTG limps, 2nd player folds and I raise to get everyone else out. Button, both blinds and utg call. Flops comes Q109 rainbow. Checks to me, I bet and everyone folds except utg and she reraises me. I reraise and she reraises and I call. I say to her you got KJ? Turn comes a nine and she bets and I fold my AQ face up and she shows me the KJ. I knew my read was dead on but I have 2 questions to ask:

First, was raising with AQ proper? I feel with the lower limits and maybe true for higher, people will call you with anything if they have put money in already. I ask this not bashing the utg player. She was right in calling and I don't blame her. My raise was just to push out all the other players and it didn't really work when only 2 of the players left to act after me folded pre-flop. Just not sure if it is really worth raising in mid to late position unless you have AA or KK. Seems like every flop has 4-6 players in it and raises don't deter unless it is 3 bets to them and even then they call most of the time.

Second, should I have called her turn bet on the AQ vs. KJ hand? The reason I ask this is because I had 4 outs and of course the pot odds were there for me. I think folding when I was 99% sure I was beat was correct. I did the card player calculator and I was a 9-1 dog going into the river. I think my fold was correct but should I have chased to try to fill up?

All comments much appreciated.

Well, done playing live poker till next Friday.

Dags dropped 80k...crazy

So last night as I was bored and busted out of a few free rolls on PS, so I decided to download and install FTP. I've heard of the crazy pot limit omaha games they have on there with there bevy of big name pros. Well those stories were true.

The first table I railed was the 100-200 pot-limit omaha game with Crazyhorse Vaswani playing. He quickly built up his 4-5k up to almost 20k but then dumped it to Juanda who joined later and went from 10k to 40k in no time. I then noticed Matusow playing a 25-50 NLH game. Funny to watch, no big swings for Mike this time but he actually talks in the chat box some of the time.

Now the fun begins. I see John D'Agostino starting a 200-400 PLO game. Soon Ivey joins along with Juanda and a few other players. Dags is in for 40k along with Ivey. Play is fast and furious. Dags was down to 35k and then in one hand went all in I believe on the turn and got called and lost a 70k pot to some guy. He quickly rebuys for 40k and then about 30 minutes later one of the worst plays I've ever seen from a pro (right up there with Matusow blowing up on High Stakes Poker) happens. A solid player raises and Dags calls. Flop comes K high. Guy bets almost the pot and Dags calls. Turn comes a blank and the guy bets the pot again. Dags uses almost all of his time bank and then calls. River another K and the guy checks (what a check). Dags takes his time and then goes all in for his last 15k. The guy instantly calls and shows KKxx in the hole. Dags just had pocket 10's. I guess he though he was good but I don't know how he thought he had the best hand. I'm not a PLO expert as I have only played play money PLO but that seemed like a no-brainer check on the river and hope your 10's are good enough. So in about 50 minutes, Dags was down 80k. I then saw him buy in for 100k in a heads up NL game with another player from the PLO game that challenged him verbally through the chat box. I watched for a few minutes and Dags was down about 15k in that when I turned off. Not sure how it ended up. Ivey was waiting for 1-2k omahi hi/low and stud hi/low but had no takers.

Overall, I saw Juanda, Vaswani, Patterson, Mizrachi (Grinders Bro), Johnston, Matusow, Ivey, Dags, Watkinson, and Furst. Neat to see the pro's play and I like how FTP let's you know they are playing by making the tables red in the lobby.

Does JJ EVER win!?!?!?!?

Get dealt JJ 3 times in 5 hands.

Once I just smooth-call a raise, we go heads-up to the flop... K hits the flop. It's bet, I raise, I get re-raised, I fold.

Once I raise, 4 to the flop... A-Q-9 hits the flop. It's bet, I fold.

Once I limp, 4 to the flop... A hits the flop. It's bet I fold.

It's not looking good.

Argh.

It's hard to make money on Poker Stars

So I had $150 left in my PS account after my collapse a couple months ago (dumped 90% of my bankroll in 4 horribly played hands). I logged on last night and headed straight for the 1/2 NL game. Of course, it took me only a few rounds to pick up AA and KK and as the donkeys always do, had people move all-in on me on the flop. In a matter of 20 minutes, I had already doubled my buy-in and decided to head over to what has been my main cash source... the NL SNGs.

... And proceeded to get my ass handed to me.

In my experience, bad players DO NOT play SNGs on Stars. Why the hell not??? The fish were ALWAYS playing the mid-limit SNGs on Party ($20 - $50 buy-ins). Nothing but rocks at those same limits on Stars.

On Party Poker, I cashed about 60% of the time in the 6 handed SNGs. When Party decided to shut its doors to U.S. customers, I lost an average income of about $1400 a month.

I'm in a position now where I can brush up on my NL game in anticpation of next week's play with Stewman at Pechanga. However, I do miss making money in the SNGs.

~NBA~

Freerolls abound

So since I have no money right now, I am playing the free rolls on PS. I played the daily Hubble 10000 person last night and the recent $5000 promotion ones. I busted out 793 out of 10k in the $5000. Top 50 go to$5000 tourney. I finished 56 out of 10k in the Hubble missing the cut of the top 27 who move onto the $1k free roll tourney next week. Blinds 4-8k with $300 ante. I opened UTG with A10 for 30k, leaving me 52k. I got one caller and then the button min raised. So instead of thinking about his weird raise, I just pushed for my last 52k. The other guy called all in also. Well you don't know what everyone has till the hand is fully dealt. The board comes kk99x. The min raiser of course has AA and ighn.

I played great and had an above average stack till about 100 people left and then I got raised off a hand, called a few raises and had to fold on the flop, and then donkeyed off my last chips. I need to work on taking my time on-line. Live play, I take my time and usually make the correct decision and get my money in good but on-line I just click away like a madman sometimes. This was the case last night. So 4 hours down the drain because I rushed my decision.

Next weekend I look forward with eager anticipation to a ton of poker with NBA . Hopefully we will play a few tourney's and then some NL and LHE action.
