Road to the WSOP

Update:
I busted out 2202 out of 3582. I got crippled very early on when my AJ lost to AA. I raised pre flop to 120, got reraised to 250. Flop comes Jack high, I bet he raises me. So I figure he may have Q's or K's. I call, turn an Ace. I check, he bets the pot and I move all in and he calls instantly. Tough beat. I had 350 left. I built back up to 2200 but then got short stack and I went all in on a flush draw and never hit.

So yesterday I played in a freeroll on PP for the chance to get into a satellite to get into the WSOP. 3500 players, top fifty make it and I finished 22. I was coasting till my Aces (They were both red NBA)were cracked by 76 when my opponent hit a 3rd 7 on the turn. I was now down to about 20k I doubled up to almost 40k when this hand happened. I was on the button with 10d9d (gotta love those suited connectors).

My 5th straight flush of my life and a great time for it. So tomorrow I play in the satellite with probably another 3500 people. Top spot gets a seat into the 50k H.O.R.S.E. even at the WSOP. 2-10 get seats into the ME and 11-20 get seats into a lower NLH event if I understand everything correctly. I could be wrong about this.

I like my chances but I'll probably have to leave early if I make it far for a prior commitment. The last 2 big field tourney's I have played I have finished 24(1200+ field w/$1 entry fee) and 22 with no entry fee so the caliber of play isn't the best but still not bad.

Play Perfect Poker And This Can Happen To You

Well, I played perfect poker (as I have for the last 3 weeks) and it finally paid off... It's small, but the money doesn't mean as much as the trophy.

Luck sure helped a bunch... I saw pocket Aces 4 times in 1 tourney, won all 4 times, doubling up twice with em. I also was dealt KK and QQ quite a few times, every one of em holding up. I won with AK vs QQ against a huge stack and bullied my way to victory on the final table.

In other news, I was simultaniously playing the $44 multi and proceeded to lose with AK to AJ (crippled me down to 1/3rd the avg stack) but built my way back with some well timed steals and great bluffs. The final hand saw me holding KK and losing to AQ. Oh! And guess what...? In both hands, the money went in the middle with me as the favorite.

My analysis of my play: Perfect again. I didn't make one mistake in either tourney. I took some risks and some paid off, and some didn't, but I never made a bad call, and never pushed with the worst hand.

I'm building that bankroll for June, Stewman. At this pace, I should have $300 by then!

My apoligies in advance to all Red Sox fans

http://deadspin.com/sports/baseball/game-6-rbi-baseball-style-166188.php

Brilliant freaking peace of work.

I never get lucky

I was thinking today about my recent play and I realized something... I never get lucky. Seriously. I rarely win coinflips as of late and when I push PF with Ace high and get called by Queen high or Jack high (ALWAYS defending their fucking blind), they always hit.

I played a 5 table SNG today... I moved all-in ONCE and I lost. Guess what, though? I was the favorite when I put all my money in the middle. I am almost ALWAYS the favorite when I put all my money in the middle!

I was the chip leader with 12 people left without ever putting all my chips at risk. But the one time I had to push when I was short-stacked, I pushed on the button with A9 suited and got called by the small blind holding A8 off-suit and he hit his goddammned 3-outer!

5th place paid $90. Wow. 1st was $300.

I can't wait for the WSOP in 2 more months. All year of playing great poker and getting unlucky HAS TO add up to one week of getting lucky when I need it most.

Strike 2

I played well again in today's WSOP Satellite, but to no avail. 353 entrants meant that top 6 would win seats into the main event this year.

I didn't really suffer any bad beats... I got dealt 3 moderate hands but each one put me to the test. I flopped a set with a board of 3 diamonds and got check-raised all-in. I knew he had only one big diamond, and I made the call knowing that if I could dodge a diamond or pair the board, I would be in great chip position early. I did both as the board brought two clubs and the river paired the board with aces. Another hand saw me pushing all-in on the turn with pocket 9s and two overcards on the flop when the board paired one of the overcards. The guy let his timer tick all the way down (40 seconds!) and folded. He was on the draw... by second 30, I was praying for a call! I just made one mistake by overbetting pocket kings preflop in EP with blinds at 200-400. I was hoping it looked like a desparation move with a small pair hoping to get a K-Q or A-Q to call. They all folded and I just kept telling myself it's better to win a lot of small pots, not just one big pot.

After the pocket kings, I didn't play a hand for two orbits. Got dealt 5 high in the both the BB and SB the first time in raised pots and then I got dealt pocket 9s in the SB.

Here's my thinking. Comments are of course appreciated. Taz999 is the bigstack of the table. He is about T5,000 chips above the average and it folds to him in the cutoff. A raise of 1900 = 3.16 x the BB. An obvious steal attempt. My dillema was that I did not have enough chips to call and see the flop only to fold to overcards. Of the 50 cards left in the deck, 20 of them were bigger than 9. Even if the flop comes 8 high and I push, he is committed and would have to call another T2,200 with a pot of T6,600... getting EXACTLY 3-1 on his money with possibly two overcards and two cards to come.

I know my pre-flop push won't scare him off, so all I can do is put my money in the middle with the best hand and hope the numbers support my decision. He was suited with diamonds (I had the 9s of clubs and hearts) and when the cards flipped over, I was BARELY a 51% favorite. The jack hit the flop and I go home packing.

1 hour and 40 minutes and I only made one mistake... a mistake that didn't cost me any of my chips, just cost me the chance to win more chips. I lost after I was short-stacked going up against the chip leader even though I put my money in with the best hand.

I know that if I continue to play near flawless poker, one of these times I will get lucky and win.

I know it.
